Your Bio

Welcome to 'Big Apple Fire Photography', currently the largest site on the internet of F.D.N.Y. Photographs. My name is Daniel Alfonso. I am a New York City fireman and I also served as a dispatcher for the F.D.N.Y.. I have been shooting freelance F.D.N.Y. photography for 15 years.

I currently use the Nikon D300 DSLR. The photos in my galleries were taken using the Nikon D80, D70 and the N90s. This gallery is not affiliated with the New York City Fire Department. This site is owned and operated by Daniel P. Alfonso.

The following is a pictorial essay of one of the busiest department's in the country, The F.D.N.Y. You will also find photos featuring other departments in action.

I hope you enjoy the site and please be sure to come back as photos will be added often. This site enables you to purchase photos off the site, in whatever size and finish, mousepads and buttons! Queens 22-2146 (05/10/08) : Fire Companies in the 51 Battalion were assigned to respond to a phone alarm for Box 2146 located at 109 Avenue and 95 Street in the Ozone Park section of the Borough. Enroute to the box, numerous reports of civilians trapped were announced by Queens Fire Alarm Dispatchers. On arrival, units were encountered with a heavy fire condition in a two and a half story frame private dwelling with a similar attached exposure. A second alarm was transmitted for minor extension into the exposure.

Faces of the Bravest - The Brotherhood : The job of a firefighter is one of the most dangerous professions around. Firefighting is a calling, it isn't just a job. Firefighters are a special breed of men and women going into a hostile atmostphere while others are running out. This career is attractive not primarily because of the salary or benefits. It is because there isn't a day that goes by that firefighters don't make a difference in someone's life by helping them in probably the most traumatic time of their life. The love amongst one another in the fire service is a Brotherhood.

Sometimes it looks awkward in the eyes of the public when firefighters are seen standing around or in the firehouse between runs (calls). But when the tone alarm goes off and the companies turn out to respond, firefighters never know the destiny of their fate. When you see them at a fire, in the supermarket, on the street or you are passing your neighborhood firehouse take a brief moment to wish them well and to say thank you.

In this gallery you will find the faces of the F.D.N.Y. Brotherhood that served and that are currently active in the F.D.N.Y.

I would also like to share many photos of close friends that I lost on September 11th. I miss them all greatly and they will never, ever be forgotten.

The FDNY War Years : This gallery takes us back to when the F.D.N.Y. caught record amounts of fire duty. From the interchange program, companies with 2nd sections, no masks (and if there were, and if you had one, they were extremely bulky), rubber turnout coats, pull-up boots--or no boots..You'll see all of these in the following photos courtesy of retired Deputy Director of Fire Communications for the F.D.N.Y. Joe Higgins.

These photos were scanned off of negatives over 30 years old--some may be alittle scratchy, but you'll get the point, Enjoy!
